Project

The aim of the project is to create an Open Access repository for selected publications by the more than 300 German scientists who have been awarded the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize by the German Research Foundation (DFG) since 1986. In the summer of 2007, the president of the DFG, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Kleiner, had asked the scientists who had been awarded the prize until 2005 to name up to ten publications of their own which they would want to see available in Open Access, through a common platform of the prize winners. Based on the lists of titles that were handed in as a response, the project is the nucleus for realising the line of action 10 “Open Access/Cream of Science for Germany” of the DFG position paper “Funding Priorities Through 2015” in the field of “Scientific Library Services and Information Systems” from 2006.

Since 2009, the Bavarian State Library (in a project funded by the DFG) has been working towards agreements with the rights owners in terms of licensing those publications named in the first survey for the sake of their free accessibility on the Leibniz Publik portal in the published version. The licensing negotiations were carried out in the Department of Acquisition, Collection Development and Cataloguing 2: Periodicals; Licensing; Electronic Publishing.

Several publishers have since then been participating in the project and have granted the project non-exclusive rights of use, which allows the Bavarian State Library to enable the access and download of these works protected by copyright for private and scientific use. In the case of certain providers, the documents are not stored on the Leibniz Publik server, but the publisher has provided the platform with specific links which allow free access to the document in question on their server. Furthermore, a repository with an advanced search engine for the titles to be included has been created.

A special thanks to the speakers who gave us permission to publish their presentations held at the Symposia.
